True Progressivism

This article tackles the combined dilemma of inequality and the world economy. The Economist means that a new form of radical centrist politics is needed to tackle inequality – without hurting economic growth, that is. In accordance with America’s history, by the end of the 19th century, governments introduced progressive taxation and paved the way to social safety. The aim of this new “Progressive era”, was to make society fairer without reducing its entrepreneurial vim. Now, in 2012, modern politics needs to undergo a similar reinvention – true progressivism – in order to create ways of mitigating inequality without hurting economic growth. Almost needless to say, this prospect is resulting in a hot bed of political debate…
