Eulogy for a Continuous Improvement Program |
When you were born, everyone could see the twinkle in your eyes for the fire and passion you held. As you grew, you became inspired by the reported accomplishments of others; and consumed with great enthusiasm and dedication every bit of knowledge that was at your disposal. You had the good fortune of being influenced by mentors along the way who helped you to know their espoused path to the Corporate Valhalla as they understood it. Driven by this youthful exuberance, you believed you could make a positive and indelible mark on the world. You started applying what you knew to pursuing your purpose in life; to improve company performance by delighting customers and improving the circumstances of those who worked at the companies dedicated to such. When you matured from being a disjointed series of projects to being a program, there was great fanfare and much self-congratulations as you worked on one project after another in pursuit of these goals – driving benefits every step of the way. But in early 2020, you started to not feel like your usual self, growing increasingly anxious as you became progressively ill. People started treating you differently than you had become accustom. And by the middle of 2020, bereft of life, you had shed your mortal coil and passed onward into that good night. But it was not COVID that killed you. No, the root-cause of your death was an unmistakable void, even misguidance, in the knowledge you gained as you matured and grew and the purpose that you had. And that is why you died. by Joseph Paris |

Benchmark your Operational Excellence Program |
They say that “up to 70% of Operational Excellence and Continuous improvement programs fail.” Don’t be one of them. Be the exception, not the rule. “Fail to plan, plan to fail.” To help you, your program, and your company to be successful, XONITEK has created a Program Architecting Whitepaper where you will find the best practices for the planning stage of an OpEx/CI program. Even if you already have a program, you can use it as a benchmark to see how your efforts compare. Click below to receive a copy of our 20+ page Best-Practices Program Architecting Whitepaper. |
Operational Excellence in a Digital World Traditionally in the Service Industry, Operational Excellence (OpEx) focused on the Operations function: Back and Mid Offices fulfilling the client’s request. Main focus was on decreasing handling and throughput time, with techniques like Lean Thinking, Six Sigma and Scientific Management. The goal was mainly to let humans work more efficiently. However, in the last years, the Service Industry has been undergoing a Digital Transformation (DX), with ‘old jobs’ being lost at a big rate. In a true DX, Customer Experience is improved using digital techniques, while automating the work. As a result, the ‘good old’ Back Offices are rapidly shrinking and so is the field of OpEx. So what is the impact of this DX on the OpEx field of expertise? Should we ‘say goodbye’ to the field of OpEx? Forget about Lean, Six Sigma and Scientific Management? Manage You Suppliers’ Internal Defects As a manufacturer, we want our defects rate to be as close as possible to the “Six Sigma level, 3.4 defects per million opportunities” (DPMO) on products we fabricate. A possibly overlooked key is how we manage our suppliers’ defects; what they do with the recovered contents off the parts we reject and return to them, and get shipped back to us as input to our own manufacturing processes. Here’s what we need to know, and take action on. The ultimate customers (the final buyers of the OEMs’ products) can have confidence with the quality of the goods they get, when informed that the manufacturers of the products they buy, and the manufacturers’ supply chain, practice “lean six sigma.” As professionals in the supply chain, we do not intend to fail these customers: the OEMs and the final buyers. But are we failing them? Did we ever fail them? Sadly, based on the writer’s decades of North America manufacturing experience, the answer is: “In a few cases, yes!” Why? How? by The Operational Excellence Society |

So here’s the story; Antlerboy and JP had noticed that all of the guests at The Outliers Inn have been men. So we wanted to consciously seek to make our guests more diverse and we came up with the idea to devote a show only to guests who were women – that we decided to call it “Lady’s Night” was a faux pas,, admittedly. However, our guests were gracious, understanding, and forgiving of our faux pas. And it’s a good thing. Because the conversations left an indelible and positive on the managers of The Outliers Inn and we hope they will return soon. |
