As we come to the end of another year, we find ourselves reflective of the year’s hard fought battles won and lost, of loves arrived and departed, and of successes and disappointments.
With rebuilding spirit, we look with great anticipation to what lay before us in the coming year.
And, most importantly, we look to reconnect over the next few weeks with our families and friends. After all, we do what we do professionally – not for love of treasure, or stature, or other such hubris – but to leave an indelible and positive mark on this Earth and on all whom we touch and who are a part of our lives.
It has been a great pleasure to be a part of your life’s journey. I am very grateful for your time, consideration, and support – and hope that I have been a benefit to you somehow.
So, as the Irish cheer goes, “May the best of your 2014 be the worst of your 2015.“
Taking Business Performance to the Next Level

Dear Readers: I am deep in the throes of finishing my first book and am working diligently on completing the first draft before I send it to the butcher (i.e. Editor). My target date is end-of-December (which is reasonably attainable). As such, I find that I am not really able to parse my attention and energy between writing the book and writing an article with the same level of quality and insight of which my articles usually consist.
So, instead, I have strung together a series of my older articles that tell the “story” of Operational Excellence; the impetus, the definition, and approach. I would be very happy to hear your thoughts and feedback (cerebral dissent is especially welcome).
I recently read a great article listing the business benefits of Lean Manufacturing, or as I prefer to call it: Operational Excellence. The article cites progress and benefits in two companies – Toyota and Danaher. The benefits include: lead time reduction, productivity increase, WIP (work in Process) inventory reduction, quality improvement, and better space utilization.
These companies also showed very good EBIT resulting in better cash flow from operations, and stock price appreciation that beat major stock indices over a period of 30 years. I must confess I typically focus on the quality, productivity, and workplace benefits; but the financial benefits are equally amazing. But how do you get there?
