8.5 “Must Know” Career Tips & Tricks (Redux)

I wrote the first version of this article almost a year ago and, since then, I have had several people remark to me that it has helped them a great deal (which is the point, I guess.)  I have also had several people give me some new ideas and, of course, I have had time to rethink and revise what I had written.

As many of you may or may not know, I mentor a great many young adults on their career trajectory and development (both academic and professional.)  Besides gaining the personal satisfaction of helping others, I also feel it is a repayment of a debt to those who were my mentors – and trust that those I mentor will one day become mentors themselves.

It is usually this time of year – when the school year is at an end – students come to me for guidance on their professional endeavors; summer internships, career changes, or even that first, entry-level job in their chosen profession.  Some of the requests are beyond the experience of many other mentors such as: immigration/emigration issues, long-term financial planning, the work/life balancing act, career “if-then-else”, and the like.  I take it all very seriously because it is really serious stuff at a really serious time in a person’s life.

9 Critical Roles for Top Management in Improvement Programs

The success of improvement programs in most organizations not only impacts their competitiveness, but in many cases also their survival. Programs like Operational Excellence, Lean Transformation, Process Re-engineering, Cost Reduction, etc., are launched with a lot of fanfare, but sadly, they either die an unnatural death after some time or become painfully slow.

Much care is taken to roll out projects and initiatives across an organization, and high expectations from the working teams are set. However, what are normally overlooked are the critical roles that top management needs to play in order to ensure success. While the intent and objectives of these programs are in place, not being able to support them with the appropriate policy and procedural changes is one of the key reasons for failure or subsequent slowdown. Building a Business Excellence Program in Multi-Nationals

I see many questions asked regarding the development of a BE /OE/CI/LSS (Business Excellence Operational Excellence/Continuous Improvement/Lean Six Sigma) program. There is no right or wrong answer since every business is different. However, I wanted to share my experience, thoughts and some options as it relates to multi-national organizations. Hopefully you will find them useful.

Before starting, I firmly believe that the majority of the resources need to be in the business and not as part of a large corporate team. After all, that is where the benefits are delivered and that is where the culture needs to transform. A small COE at the corporate level is necessary, but always remember that this is purely a cost which supports the businesses. Unless those businesses see you supporting them and delivering results for them, the program will be a short lived one. I’ll also share thoughts on the use of consultants, who can play an invaluable role in giving you a fast start in getting your program going in multiple locations and to extend you internal competencies.
